Natural Deodorant: What It Does and What to Expect

Switching to a natural deodorant is easier when you know what deodorant is meant to do, and what it cannot do.

Deodorant and antiperspirant are different

A deodorant prevents or masks body odour, which comes from bacteria breaking down sweat. Antiperspirants are a subclass designed to reduce sweating itself. Most natural deodorants are deodorants only: you will still sweat, but should smell less.

Common ingredient types

If it irritates

Some natural deodorants contain ingredients that sensitive underarm skin does not tolerate. If you see redness or a rash, stop using it and try a formula without that ingredient. Patch testing first helps.

Be wary of big claims

Marketing sometimes describes the switch in dramatic terms. Treat claims about health effects with caution unless the seller cites real evidence, and ask a doctor if you have a specific concern.
